There are roles to suit a party of four - captain, pilot, gunner, engineer - and unlike Spelljammer, you don't need to be a spellcaster just to pilot a ship. I don't know if it qualifies as "easy" enough for beginners, though. A damaged ship could mean slower travel, meaning longer time in space, meaning more encounters, meaning more damage. For a ship to have a way to repair while underway was a huge advantage and extremely rare.
