WebJellyfish have a complex life cycle that includes both a sexual stage and an asexual stage. In the sexual stage, the body (called a medusa) produces gametes (eggs and sperm). Eggs fertilized by sperm develop into a larval form (planula), which attaches to a rock or the seafloor and develops into a polyp, which is the asexual stage. WebJellyfish, anemones, corals and other cnidarians. Jellyfish, anemones, corals and hydroids are collectively known as cnidarians (Ancient Greek: knide = nettle, named after a type of plant with stinging hairs). With over 10,000 known species, they all have soft, hollow bodies, live in water and generally have tentacles.
