Rodents are opportunists and the fact that your 2012 Equinox has only 3500 miles on it is irrelevant to the rodent. It's just the wrong place at the wrong time. All cars have open intakes for cabin air before they hit the filters. I understood why I had rodents because my heat shield was left open and was easy for rodents to nest in, but your situation is more unique.
